Standard Benchmarks and Learning Objectives are very important in a lesson. In this lesson plan, the teacher sets out clear instructions to the students in her classroom to do this report. The teacher is very descriptive about her ideas for the class and how they should write and learn how to do an research project. The standards that drive the inferring meanings to deepen this report lesson is having children use their own knowledge and answer their own questions to help them learn about what dinosaur their researching on.
The main objective of this lesson is to have children learn how to a research report.
II. The Learning Environment
The environment that the students were in, looked like any other classroom. With pictures, students work, and posters all over the walls. While presenting the project the children were all sitting in on the floor together on the rug. What she also did to begin her lesson, was she seperated the kids into pairs, and asked them to work with there partners and tell them what they wanted to know about there dinosaur. I think it was affective becuase when the students got back together as a whole and began to tell the teacher what they wanted to know about there dinosaur, the kids had so many questions, and things they wanted to know about there dinosaur.
III. The Learning Activities
The Opening of the lesson the teacher started it off by explaining how they have a report, and began to remind the kids about the past reports they have done. Then she begins by telling the kids to begin thinking about questions they had about the dinosaur they are researching on. The kids came up with so many questions. In the middle of the report the kids had to do research on there dinosaurs in books and read about there dinosaur, the teacher sat down with students one on one and helped the student read along what they were reading. A good strategy that i notcie the teacher did was instead of telling the student rigth away what the word that they were struggling said she broke it down and gave them hints so they could learn it on there own. While they were doing there research the students would write there information on sticky notes and stick them in there journal. When the teacher was explaining the process of writing there infromation on sticky notes then sticking them in there journal, she showed them an example of how she wanted it, she gave them an idea of a big file folder and sticking all of the notes (sticky notes) into this folder, but told them that there folder is going to be there journal. In the end the students were sitting together and shared out loud there facts about there dinosaur, and told the kids to take there journal and close it with all there sticky notes inside of it and stick it in there desks, and that was her wrap up on her lesson based on research.
IV. Personal Reflections (Yours)
Kimberly: In the Dinosaur Report Standard Based Lesson did adress the objective in the class. The teacher stated that they are going to do a report, she reminds them about other reports they have done in the past. After she has told them about what they are expected to do (a report) she begins to get into detail and explain what she wants in the report. I believe from watching the video clips the students were engaged, because she seperates them into groups and told them to ask there partner what would they like to know about there Dinosaur. Right away the kids turned to eachother and began to speak to eachother. Then the teacher asked them what things they would like to know about there dinosaur and they had so many questions about there dinosaur. What suprised me the most about this was how many questions the students had about dinosaur. They are so smart asking so many questions, and what also suprised me that even the teacher pointed out in the video, was how quiet the students were in the classroom, they were behaving so well.
Stephanie: Well the whole video was shocking. As I was watching the video I was in shocked of how the young boys and girls were engaged with the conversation with the teacher, and also knowing how to do a research project at such a young age. I also love how the students in the classroom gave a lot good questions they would like to find out about their dinosaur it was unbelievable how bright these young kids are. I also love the communication they had with one another and felt that each student was respected equally. I love this video, especially when the kids were done with their project, and you can actually see the whole report, and can tell how much work they did and how excited they were to do this report. I also thought that all these report meet standard meaning they all great grades. I'm still kind of shock about how much they new about writing a report also it was great to know that they ask help when they needed it. I thought that the report was awesome.
